What is a Deed Poll?
A Deed Poll is not a certificate, it is a type of legal Deed made by one person expressing an intention, or two or more persons expressing the same common intention. This means that once a Deed Poll is signed by the person named within, it becomes a legally binding contract in which you have agreed to abide by certain steps detailed within the Deed Poll.
The use of a Deed is not limited to changing names. In fact Deeds come in many forms; such as Mortgage Deeds. A Deed is actually more legally binding than a standard contract in certain circumstances. When you change your name by Deed Poll it is known as a "Deed of Change of Name".
When you have signed and dated your Deed Poll under witness then you are legally committing to the following:
- Abandoning the use of your old name
- Using your new name at all times
- Requiring all persons to address you by your new name
Your Deed Poll will carry our official company seal to guarantee its authenticity, and it will be recognised and accepted by all UK Government departments, companies and organisations
