The UK Deed Poll Office

Who can be my witness?

When signing your Deed Poll paperwork, you will need to do so in the presence of an independent witness. The witness must be over the age of 18 and not related to you or living at your address i.e. a lodger.

Therefore, our clients typically choose a friend, work colleague or neighbour to be their witness.

Please note, the purpose of the witness is to attest your signature, it does not matter how long they have known you for. However, they must be present when you sign the Deed Poll.

In summary, the witness should be:

  • Over 18.
  • Not related.
  • Not living at the same address.

N.B. They do not need to be a professional i.e. doctor, solicitor or teacher etc.
